September 2014 Chair Update

In my opinion, we are coming into the best time of the year here in Wisconsin. Cooler nights with sunny days. The humidity could come down a bit – I agree with you. It is an exciting time of the year.

Devan (Doan) Curley, Dave Doan, Robert Crawford and Dave Johnson competed at IPF Bench Press Nationals in San Antonio, Texas towards the end of August. Results are available online.

Still within August came the announcement of the 26th annual Hudson Natural Open having received twelve entry forms already. Mind you, the competition date is Nov. 1st and there is only sixty slots available. Last year Shawn and Kathy Cain could not take any more competitors two weeks out. Who knows when this year will fill up. If you are training for the Hudson, you may want to commit via your entry form or wait until the next contest. As of September 2nd, 24 entry forms have been received!

When is the next USA Powerlifting sanctioned contest in Wisconsin? The WI State Open is January 17th in Greenfield. Same venue as last year, same partnership between myself and Whitnall HS powerlifting team, same three platform setup, same categories of 3Lift / BP only / Push-pull. Number of slots for entrants is limited to 140 this year. On-line registration only with electronic payment. No walk-ins or late entries will be accepted. More information to be available in the next six weeks on this website and the WI USAPL Facebook page. I am told there are a few teams being formed in and around Wisconsin. Very exciting and will have to adjust my budget for team awards.

Also looking to promote the collegiate age category at The WI State Open contest so we have Wisconsin representation at 2015 USAPL Collegiate Nationals April 10-12. Compete at the January contest in the collegiate category and you may be eligible for one of two opportunities where the (2015 collegiate) nationals entry fee is taken care of.

The month of September has had a great start and it is the young’uns leading it. Nope – not the start of school. World Sub-Junior & Junior Championships are this week in Oroshaza, Hungary. Many postings on USAPL Wisconsin and Wisconsin High School Powerlifting Association Facebook pages. Early mornings are the best time to catch the action live. Wisconsin has many slots on the US team and has been steadily contributing to team points on the first two days. More great lifts to come.

Many of you have stated you would like to ‘give back to the sport’. I am looking for sponsors and product donations. Would your employer consider sponsoring the upcoming events – WI State Open in January or the USAPL High School Nationals in March? Maybe you would like to cover some of the entry fee cost for a high school competitor at nationals. Any interest or any ideas please let me know.

Best regards,

Summer in Wisconsin

Summer is in full swing and so is the powerlifting season. Lots of links within. Many highlights for you:

May

June was busy

  • The Badger Open in Neenah with 100+ competitors on two platforms! Many American and state records broken. State records to be updated within the week.
  • 8-9 members competed in Men’s Nationals in Philadelphia on June 20-22
  • The National Governing Body (NGB) meeting was held on June 12 in Philly. Many topics discussed and voted on. Effective on January 1, ’15 all sanctioned USAPL contests will be utilizing the IPF weight classes (link to rulebook, weight classes on page 7). One exception will be high school only contests including high school nationals. State records for current weight classes will be ‘frozen’ on 12-31-14 and a new set will commence on 1-1-15 unless the competitor’s bodyweight is at or under the IPF weight class on competition day (per published results). Another topic of interest to many; implement qualifying totals (QT) Raw Nationals in 2015 – passed. This year’s contest will be the last without QTs. The complete minutes are available online.

July – the action hasn’t slowed down! Not at all

  • Several members competing at Raw Nationals in Aurora, CO on July 18, 19 & 20th. I will be there as a member of the officiating team.
  • The Neenah powerlifting camp is still taking entrants. Open to all ages and experience levels. This camp is going to be a great experience for all who attend.  The dates are July 18 and 19.

August also has a competition right here in the state the Omro Summer Classic is August 2 for competitors between the ages of 14 and 19. Not too late to sign up for this contest. It is also a qualifier for the USAPL High School Championships held in Milwaukee next March.

There are also many sub-junior (14-18) and junior (19-23) Wisconsin members training over the summer for September international competition in Hungary. If you want to learn more about the selection process, check out this article authored by Trey Cunningham of powerliftinghigh.com

Five newly certified state referees have joined the Wisconsin officiating crew; A. Philips, G. Kiriaki, J. Hahn, R. Johnston, S. Schubert and T. Danko. Working four additional candidates as well. Robert Crawford has achieved the national referee level at the recent Men’s Nationals, the same contest where he was presented with the USAPL/ADFPA Founders Award by our organization’s VP & Pres. This is to recognize 30+ years of starting and growing the drug-free organization we enjoy today.

Phew! Done typing for the moment. Be sure to ‘like’ the USAPL Wisconsin Facebook page to keep up on photos and news of the moment. The wiusapl.org website has a new athlete profile with another soon to be uploaded. Check them out!

Enjoy the summer,
